Good News from the TAKENUSA Program: Knowledge Sharing to Strengthen Midwives’ Capabilities for Family Planning Services

The spirit of no one left behind is in the mind of Midwife Serlina Jawa Mukin. After attending a family planning training organized by the IPAS Indonesia Foundation in December 2023, she was willing to share her knowledge with a midwife who did not attend the training in the next village.

“Personally, after attending the training, I felt that my fellow midwives deserved this [ilmu dari pelatihan],” recalls Midwife Serlina.

“I was hesitant at the time for [membagikan dan memberikan asistensi ke bidan lain], I said whether this violated the rules or not, so I consulted with the IPAS Indonesia Foundation,” he added.

At that time, Midwife Serlina admitted that there was a midwife from Lewoawang Village who asked her to provide clinical assistance. There were also senior midwives who needed help transferring knowledge and insights from the training she attended.

Lewoawang Village is about 5 kilometers away from where Serlina serves. The terrain to the village is quite dangerous because it is surrounded by cliffs. High vigilance is needed to cross the road because there are often rock avalanches from the cliff.

Usually, for this assistance, he will make an appointment first. Once there is an agreement, she will then visit the village. “The assistance is approximately four midwives, two midwives from Lewoawang Village and two midwives from the Ile Bura Health Center,” said Midwife Serlina.

During the mentoring period, she felt that the midwives were just not used to installing contraceptives. “Because so far they have only seen their seniors or midwife friends who have done the training, they have not touched the installation [mempraktikkannya],” she said.

She added that the midwives she provides assistance to sometimes do not get information related to the latest equipment, such as the use of the new implant method.

“Now [metodenya] is new, so they start with new knowledge again, the ways of all kinds of [pemasangan], they are like starting from scratch again,” he added.

In addition to visiting the neighboring village, she also welcomed her colleague to see firsthand where Midwife Serlina practices. She gladly accepted the initiative. However, she wants to make sure that midwives who want to learn from her must arrive before the patients do.

“So one hour before [pasien] came, they were already in place so I could convey important things, so that [sebelum memasang] we were ready. So friends are given an explanation first. The explanation is not only on the installation action but starting from filling in the register, filling in all the sheets prepared,” he added.

Midwife Serlina emphasized that in providing family planning services, “the basis must have knowledge if there is a mistake in action we can immediately find a way out.” From the family planning training, she gained a lot of knowledge not only for herself but also to share with other midwives.
